One of the most difficult things all of us will have to learn how to do in life is deal with difficult people. Sometimes these people are our bosses or colleagues. Other times it’s even more personal – a relative, friend, or partner.
Here’s one of the most important things to remember when dealing with difficult people – it’s not about them at all; it’s about how YOU are able to control your own thoughts and emotions – to keep it about the topic of conversation instead of “winning” the debate.
Remember that your challenge is not in trying to change that person’s anger or push back – your power lies in how you respond, how you learn to LISTEN and VALIDATE other’s emotions that you may find to be unreasonable or really ridiculous, and how you get them to listen to you – so you can get what you want without losing control of your emotions. Learn how to make heart-first decisions instead of ego-driven ones, and you’ll see just how much more you’ll accomplish.
