Raise your hand if you get so overwhelmed by the thought of all the big things you want to do with your life that you can’t possibly figure out where to start?

You’re not alone.

Today I’m busting one of the biggest excuses I hear for why you aren’t actively working on your dreams:

I don’t know the right place to start.

Take a deep breath, because this will change everything: There is no right place to start. It doesn’t exist.

Really. There’s absolutely no way you can mess this up. There is no perfect path, or guaranteed order of steps to take that will get you there.

It’s incredibly liberating because it means you can call off the search for the right place to start and just focus on starting. You really can’t make a wrong move.

Start thinking of working on your dreams like you’re working on a puzzle. Each piece is a part of the bigger picture. You might not know where it goes yet, or what it connects to, but you know it has value. Eventually, you start to connect them, and the picture starts coming into view. It’s easier to find where the next piece goes. And the next one. And the next one.

Working on your dreams is the same process. You just have to pick a piece to start with.

So, how do you even find the first piece? Well, I’ve got good news. You’re in #BestDecadeEver, and that is the first step. Now, it’s time to choose the next piece.

So where do you go next? The options are almost limitless. This is such a cool time to be alive. You have SO much information available to you at your fingertips. And a ton of it won’t cost you a dime.

We put together a big list of steps you can take to help get you started.

Not all of these will apply to your dreams, but some of them will. Choose just ONE to do this week. Schedule it into your calendar so you remember to do it. Share it with me in our Facebook Group, my Community Text number 617-284-0725, or on social media. I can’t wait to see what you do!

List of Ideas:

  1. Google “how do I [insert your dream here]”
  2. Sign up for a newsletter.
  3. Follow someone on social media who is an expert in what you’re interested in or someone who’s just getting started like you.
  4. Listen to a podcast. One of my favorites is “How I Built This.”
  5. If you can afford it, buy a beginner’s kit. If you’re on a budget, go to a tag sale, thrift shop, or look online to see if you can find the gear you need used or less expensive.
  6. Research online classes. Udemy and MasterClass have great options.
  7. Watch a YouTube video.
  8. Watch a documentary.
  9. Research an in-person class. Most cities have community colleges or adult education centers with affordable options on almost any subject.
  10. Find a buddy who’s going through the same process you are, make a plan to hold each other accountable.
  11. Talk to ANYBODY (ex. Coworker, the person waiting next to you for their coffee, a friend, a distant family member, a mentor, someone online, etc.) You never know what connections/backstories people might have.
  12. Download an Audible book.
  13. Go to a library and look at the books on the topic you want to learn more about.
  14. Read one of those books.
  15. Join a Facebook group or SubReddit.
  16. Find a networking event. CreativeMornings is a cool one. If there’s not one in your city, start one!
  17. Volunteer at an event. You can usually get lower cost or free tickets that way, plus great networking opportunities!
  18. Find a seminar.
  19. Make a list of things that interest you.
  20. Get a journal and start writing.
  21. Read a blog or an article.
  22. E-mail someone doing what you want to do and ask them a question. They might not answer, and that’s okay. Keep asking until you find someone who does.
  23. Start a blog.
  24. Have a brainstorming session to get your ideas down on paper.
  25. Write a list of skills your dream requires. Research the one that’s most interesting to you.
  26. Go to a place that’s doing what you want to do. Take notes. (i.e. if you want to start a brewery, go visit one! Write down what you like, what you don’t like, what surprised you, anything you notice!)
  27. Download an app to keep you on track. If you want to become a runner, try Couch to 5K.
  28. Download an app to teach you something new. Want to learn a language? Try DuoLingo.
  29. Join Toastmasters.
  30. Research someone you admire.
  31. Ask a friend where they would start. They might have a different perspective that you never would have thought of on your own.
  32. Ask to shadow someone for a day.
