Screw Yourself!

Hey, remember me? The Mel Robbins blog? Sorry about that, but with the radio show, kids back to school, coaching soccer, a full time job, a fitness routine, America’s Got Talent winding down, Mad Men premiering, and having to attend every Town Hall Meeting to shout down members of Congress regarding health care reform, well, a blog guy can get busy. But don’t worry, if you can’t get great advice from the blog, make sure you are listening to Borders Radio every weekday from 11am to 12 noon, and to WTKK-FM when we tell you to, or dial into the daily Cellecast, 206-905-0770, once the show goes live.

Were you brainwashed yesterday by Obama’s message to America’s students? Stay in school? Work hard? Listen to your parents and teachers? That guy’s got some nerve spreading propaganda like that. Right? Next thing you know he’ll be telling kids to eat their vegetables and go to bed early. The nerve! (I hope you are picking up the sarcasm I’m laying down) You know we don’t take sides here, but are we really a nation where everything is partisan? It shouldn’t be this way, and it doesn’t have to be. It starts with you and how you receive what you hear and read and then, and this is key, forming your own opinion and judgements.

So much to discuss, but I’d like to start with Antwan who called us last week and said, “I want to be a motivational speaker.” He burst onto the phone line full of energy, positivity, and his passion for inspiring others was front and center.

“How do I make this happen, Mel? What is my next step,” he asked?

Mel told him he needed to screw himself. Whoa! Couldn’t he just say a few Hail Marys or cut and paste some pictures of famous authors and coaches onto a dream board and wait for great things to happen? Hardly. Mel told Antwan he needed to say “yes” to everything – speaking engagements, meetings, mentoring sessions, seminars …everything. He needs to say “yes” until finally he can’t take it anymore and he has to jump full time into it. For you, find as many things as you can commit yourself to. Constantly throwing your hat over the wall even though you have no time to do it all.

Then Mel told Antwan needs to be writing his blog, joining other blogs similar to his, Tweet more often, and start writing his book.

This goes for anything a person wants, be it going back to law school, opening a catering business, writing a book, or playing guitar. If you have a dream that someday you’ll be doing something bigger and more exciting than you are, now – screw yourself.

Yesterday, Antwan called back and he spent the week lining up someone to help him create a respectable looking blog, Antwan set-up times to meet with two life coaches and public speakers for mentoring sessions, and even booked himself to speak to a group of young people. And let me tell you, he gave us a quick intro to his speech and it had everything – personal stories, a clear focus, and a road map to where he’d be taking his audience.

What is poor Antwan to do, now? He’s set all these things in motion and he really is screwed, wouldn’t you say? Or is he hundreds of steps closer to his dreams and his goals?

How much closer are you?

Follow @fromA2Z on Twitter to see Antwan go, go, go. Get wrapped up in his energy and while you’re at it, screw yourself, too.
